Nisin by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. This is a polycyclic antibacterial peptide produced by the bacterium Lactococcus lactis. The reagent is available as a tan powder which is soluble in dilute acids such as 0.02 N HCl. It contains 34 amino acid residues, with some uncommon amino acids introduce by posttranslational modification. Nisin is effective against many Gram-positive organisms, including lactic acid bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Clostridium botulinum, etc. In the food industry, it is obtained from the culturing of L. lactis on natural substrates, such as milk or dextrose.
