Glutathione reductase (GR) by MP Biomedicals is a high purity enzyme. Also known as glutathione-disulfide reductase, this enzyme catalyzes the reduction of glutathione disulfide (GSSG) to the sulfhydryl form glutathione. It functions as a dimeric disulfide oxidoreductase and utilizes an FAD prosthetic group and NADPH to reduce one molar equivalent of GSSG to two molar equivalents of Glutathione. Glutathione is a critical molecule in resisting oxidative stress and maintaining the reducing environment of the cell Quantity Provided: 1 mg per Pack EC Number: 232-608-9 Activity: Approx. 120 units/mg Unit Definition: One unit oxidizes 1 mole of glutathione/min. at 25C, pH 5.5. Contaminants: Essentially free of NADPH-Oxidase, 6-PGDH. Glutathione reductase is widely used in various applications in biological sectors. Glutathione can act as a scavenger for hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, and various electrophiles. The activity of glutathione reductase is used as indicator for oxidative stress. This is monitored by the NADPH consumption, with an absorbance at 340 nm, or the formed GSH can be visualized by Ellman’s reagent. In plants, reduced glutathione participates in the glutathione-ascorbate cycle in which reduced glutathione reduces dehydroascorbate. Glutathione reductase contributes to plant response to abiotic stress. The enzymes activity reportedly moderates in response to metals, metalloids, salinity, drought, UV radiation and heat induced stress.
