Citric acid by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. Also known as Citreoviridin, this is a weak organic tricarboxylic acid which occurs naturally in citrus fruits. This reagent is available as a crystalline white powder which is soluble in water and freely soluble in alcohol, however it is very slightly soluble diethyl ether. In biochemistry, citric acid is an intermediate in the citric acid cycle, which occurs in the metabolism of all aerobic organisms. Citric acid is found in greater than trace amounts in a variety of fruits and vegetables, mostly citrus fruits. CAS No. 77-92-9 Quantity Provided: 500 gm per pack Molecular Formula: C6H8O7 Molecular Weight: 192.1 Soluble in water Citric acid is widely used in chemical and biological sectors. In the food industry, it is extensively used as E330 as an acidifier and flavouring agent. It is a component of Benedict’s reagent, used for identification both qualitatively and quantitatively, of reducing sugars. It is also used as an odourless alternative to white vinegar for home dyeing with acid dyes. Citric acid acts as an excellent iron chelator. It can support cholesterol/sterol, ubiquinone and isoprenoid biosynthesis in cell culture applications. In animals, citric acid improves the utilization of nutritional calcium. It is a useful buffer component.
