Product Description

Triton X-100 by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. Also knowns as t-Octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol, this is a non-ionic surfactant which has a hydrophilic polyethylene oxide chain and an aromatic hydrocarbon lipophilic or hydrophobic group. This reagent is available as a viscous colourless liquid which is soluble in water. It has a melting point of 6 C and a boiling point of 270 C. CAS No. 9002-93-1 Quantity Provided: 100 ml per bottle Molecular Formula: C14H22O(C2H4O)n (n = 9-10) Molecular Weight: 647 Soluble in water Triton X-100 has been widely used in biochemical applications as a detergent. This detergent is commonly used in laboratories to lyse cells to extract protein or organelles, or to permeabilize the membranes of living cells. Application include solubilizing membrane proteins in their native state in conjunction with zwitterionic detergents such as CHAPS, de-cellularization of animal-derived tissues, removing SDS from SDS-PAGE gels prior to renaturing the proteins within the gel. It is generally part of the lysis buffer (usually in a 5% solution in alkaline lysis buffer) in DNA extraction protocols. Triton X-100 is also used as an ingredient in influenza vaccine (Fluzone), for reducing surface tension of aqueous solutions during immunostaining and for industrial purposes such as plating of metals.
