- Spermine by MP Biomedicals is a high grade reagent. This compound is a polyamine involved in cellular metabolism found in all eukaryotic cells. This reagent is available as a colourless solid which is soluble in water, lower alcohol, chloroform, however it is practically insoluble in ether, benzene, petroleum ether. Spermine is found in a wide variety of organisms and tissues and it is an essential growth factor in some bacteria. Biosynthesis of spermine in animals starts from the conversion of L-Ornithine to putrescine by PLP, and through two consecutive action of N-alkylation with decarboxylated S-Adenosyl methionine (SAM). CAS No. 71-44-3 Quantity Provided: 500 mg per pack Molecular Formula: C10H26N4 Molecular Weight 202.3 Soluble in water Spermine is widely used in chemical and biological sectors. It acts as a mixed NMDA glutamate receptor agonist/antagonist at the polyamine site. Neuroprotective effects have been observed at high concentrations (1 mM), while neurotoxicity is observed at lower concentrations. It further enhances agonist effectiveness at the strychnine-insensitive glycine site. Spermine plays a role in cellular proliferation and differentiation, and inhibits neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS).
