Post the production, the macrolide is subjected to several enzymatic modifications to obtain the usable form of the drug. The drug exerts its antifungal activity by binding to ergosterol. This compound is an essential part of the fungal cell membrane. Nystatin causes formation of pores on the cell membrane of the fungus and causes efflux of potassium ions. This leads to cell-wide acidification in the fungus, and ultimate cell death.
