Antibiotic Susceptibility Tests are conducted in microbiological laboratories to study the effect of an antibiotic on the growth of a microbe. The most common method to study antibiotic susceptibility includes the Kirby-Bauer Method. In this method, small discs saturated with antibiotic is placed on the plate containing the bacteria. A zone of inhibition of growth around the disc is observed to study the susceptibility of the microbe to the antibiotic. Imipenem- IPM-10mcg is a product by Micromaster. It is classified as a beta-lactam antibiotic. Gram-negative bacteria are known to produce beta-lactamase which disables the activity of most antibiotics. Imipenem has been found to be resistant to the beta-lactamase and hence, more effective against gram-negative microbes. This is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and has shown activity against gram-positive, gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic microbes. Some of the bacteria susceptible to Imipenem include Acinetobacter anitratus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Clostridium perfringens, etc. The drug exerts its antibiotic activity by preventing the cell-wall synthesis.
