Sodium hydroxide used as a general-purpose food additive in animal drugs feeds, and related products are generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing or feeding practice.
It ranks third in tonnage production and is widely used in such processes as soap and detergent production, rubber reclaiming, petroleum manufacturing, rayon manufacture, and in the pulp and paper industry, and in many other applications. It is normally marketed as 50% and 73% concentrations as well as 100% NaOH as flakes or solids, but commercial applications often involve lower concentrations.
